Filipina Leadership Summit Design Overview
Thematically, the FWN Summit sessions focus on "advancing Filipina women in the U.S. and global workplaces" as career professionals and entrepreneurs operating in the private and public sectors including the military and defense industries. FWN's educational programming is designed to reflect FWN's mission and goals:
- Enhance public perceptions of Filipina women's capacities to lead,
- Change biases against Filipina women's leadership abilities,
- Promote the entry of Filipina women into positions of leadership in corporate, government, and nonprofit sectors,
- Build the Filipina community's pipeline of qualified leaders to increase the odds that some will rise to the President position in all sectors.
FWN's Professional Development Philosophy
- The FWN Summit has a leadership learning focus building on the key Leadership Competencies that enable Filipina leaders and professionals improve their effectiveness so they can do successful work in the U.S. and global workplaces.
- Competencies can be defined as: knowledge, skills, abilities, behaviors, accomplishments, traits, and/or characteristics, i.e., success factors, that when combined and demonstrated with the necessary level of proficiency, would yield desired outcomes. It sets the stage to further leverage strengths, identify characteristics for successful leadership and areas for improvement.
- The FWN Leadership Competencies are inspired by the major leadership attributes based on more than 25 years of research, observation and recurring themes from leaders who have attended the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) programs:
- 1) Vision,
- 2) Diplomacy,
- 3) Personal Style,
- 4) Management,
- 5) Feedback,
- 6) Personal Energy,
- 7) Empowerment,
- 8) Entrepreneurialism and
- 9) Multicultural Awareness
- Speaker Proposals are invited for learning sessions that provide a framework for development with a Filipina American bi-cultural lens, influences by pop culture and the multi-generational workforce:
- tools and activities to enhance leadership capabilities and frank discussions on executive derailment or problems that can stall a career
- strategies for continuous development through group discussions, self-reflection, and personal coaching
- strong focus on developmental experiences within the context of the business, political, social and workplace environments
- content that delves into issues and perceptions surrounding women’s leadership and work experiences
- models of power and influence, encouraging participants to explore the choices and tradeoffs they face as women juggling personal and professional objectives
- models on entrepreneurial leadership and how executives grow and develop over the course of their careers
- models on global leadership capabilities
- FWN’s intent is to offer relevant and timely information which summit attendees can apply when they return to their workplaces. We seek a range of sessions in order to offer both foundational techniques and skills (the basics) AND cutting-edge strategies and practices that further the global Filipina woman.
- Attendees appreciate case studies and best practices based on real world experience. We encourage you to involve clients when possible and to use experiential methods when appropriate.
About Filipina Women's Network (FWN)

FWN Educational Policies and Procedures
FWN programs are non-commercial. Unless appropriate within the context of the presentation, presenters should refrain from using brand names and endorsing specific products and/or services. Under no circumstances should a FWN podium be used as a place for direct promotion of a speaker's product, service, or monetary self-interest. Exceptions are those identified as “Sponsor Workshops” as a benefit of
their sponsorship package.
Presenters also must refrain from overt statements, harsh language, or pointed humor that disparages the rightful dignity and social equity of any individual or group.
Summit Schedule
Our goal is to design a balanced conference program. FWN will determine the days and times that presentations are given.
Registration
As a nonprofit educational association, FWN does not provide honoraria for presentations at the Filipina Leadership Summit. Presenters must cover all of their individual travel, hotel and living expenses.
Speakers will be able to take advantage of the early bird rates and in some cases a shared table top display/exhibit.
Program Advisory Committee Selection Process

Forums are presented in 90-minute timeframes to encourage networking and peer-to-peer exchange.
Concurrent sessions are 75 minutes in duration and focus on issues pertaining to the FWN Leadership Competencies listed in these guidelines.
Review And Notification Information
The Summit Advisory Sub-Committee will evaluate proposals submitted based solely on the information provided and will make final selections accordingly.
Selection Criteria
The selection process follows a rigorous review of every proposal submitted. The Summit Advisory Sub-Committee strives for a diverse and well-balanced programming. For the 2010 Filipina Leadership Summit, a special effort will be made to include:
- international representation on the program
- programming geared to all corporate position levels, students, entry-level and youth
- programming geared to experienced practitioners, entrepreneurs, and professionals
- sessions that offer technology applications in the project or approach presented
- sessions that focus on developing business acumen
The Program Advisory Sub-Committee encourages proposals from different companies and organizations representing diverse points of view. The committee requests that companies submit their best proposals and
to limit the number of proposals submitted to two. The committee will limit the number of proposals accepted from any one individual or organization.
Please be aware that speakers may only present one session as the sole presenter, and one additional session as a member of a panel. Proposals are selected on the basis of information submitted. Presenters, session titles, and content are expected to correspond to the proposal. Any speaker substitutions, deletions, or additions must be approved by the Summit Advisory Sub-Committee. FWN reserves the right to edit accepted presentations for publication on FWN's Website and in the Summit Program Guide in the FWN Magazine.
Criteria for the Filipinas-in-Motion and Kwenthuhan with the PROs Forums include a specific focus on the topic area, industry, or profession — with emphasis on current issues and trends—and facilitated, interactive or networking activities that promote information sharing and professional connections for participants.
Target Audience
A majority of the summit participants are full-time entrepreneurs, practitioners, consultants, and career professionals from the corporate, government, academia, military and nonprofit sectors. The audience ranges from novice part-time practitioners, some students and entrepreneurs to individuals with more than 20 years of experience in the workplace. The expected attendance for the 2010 Filipina Summit is 250-350 participants from the U.S. and this year, we have invitations to Filipina women from other countries to attend.
How To Prepare A Speaker and/or A Speaker Panel Proposal
Each proposal will be reviewed carefully for -
- completeness, accuracy, and clarity of the proposal
- action- and results-oriented learning objectives that can realistically be met in the time allotted
- clear, specific, and informative content and linkage of content to learning objectives
- content that is current and practical or cutting edge
- presenters with expertise in topic area and prior speaking experience in front of groups
Tips for Writing Good Learning Objectives
- Write three learning objectives from the perspective of the participant/attendee/learner (not your presentation objectives).
- Make objectives action- or results-oriented, using leading words like apply, analyze, discuss, develop, examine, explore, identify, recognize, and so forth.
- Avoid passive words like learn, understand, and know.
- Answer this question to help you craft your objectives:
- What will the learner know or be able to do after attending the session? (For example: Design creative learning experiences. NOT—Learn creative techniques to design learning experiences.)
- Make sure that you can deliver on the objectives you choose!
Proposals must include all requested information and must be submitted online ONLY by midnight PDT July 26, 2010.
