Filipina-American author Mia Alvar recently sat down with Buzzfeed Staff, Matt Ortile, to discuss her first book, "In The Country." She claimed to be a "fraudulent Filipina" but her book proves she's nothing if not of the country.
Her first book is a collection of nine short stories that features Filipino diaspora that draws on the author's own experiences and that characters she has met in her transnational life. Her claim to Filipino "fraudulence" is not unusual, an anxiety with which any immigrant Filipino can easily identify, but the author blames her fraudulence on her pescatarianism.
