The New York City Commission on Human Rights is hosting a public hearing on sexual harassment in the workplace on Wednesday, December 6, at 5:30pm, at CUNY School of Law in Long Island City, co-sponsored by the NY Women’s Foundation. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), who was Chair/Commissioner of the Commission from 1970-1977, will be coming up from DC to provide opening remarks. Congresswoman Holmes Norton held the first public hearings on gender discrimination in the country when she led the Commission, and we are proudly following the trail she blazed. The Commission hoping to have representatives from diverse industries, both advocates and workers, to share experiences, provide input on policy change and government response, and direct the public discourse on this issue.

NYC Chair and Commissioner Carmelyn Malalis will be chairing a panel of six commissioners from the Commission on Human Rights, the Commission on Gender Equity, and the Department of Consumer Affairs, who will be listening to the testimony and asking questions. Joining the panel will be:

  • Catherine Albisa, Commissioner, Commission on Human Rights
  • Carrie Davis, Commissioner, Commission on Human Rights
  • Ana Oliveira, Commissioner, Commission on Human Rights
  • Lorelei Salas, Commissioner, Department of Consumer Affairs
  • Beverly Tillery, Commissioner, Commission Gender Equity

The hearing will be video recorded and transcribed, and we will publish a report with findings and policy recommendations in 2018. Please join this historic moment to raise our voices.
